Perimeter and Area sheet (First page) due tomorrow!

Today we began our day with a huge review of the news articles the students wrote on Friday.
I marked all of the articles over the weekend and gave each one personalized feedback and tips for improving their articles. Each student was given their peers work to review and fill out a large peer assessment sheet. They had to analyze their peers work for well written headlines, facts, lead paragraphs, quotes and literary terms. After having their article reviewed, each student read through all the feedback from the teacher and peers. Each student then had to select one area of their article to rewrite with the new feedback. Students did an excellent job working to improve their own work and others!

After LA we moved into Math, We have begun to explore the concept of Area=Length x Width.
This concept is a review of grade 5 but with some grade 6 numbers.
I sent home a sheet today that I expect the students to finish the first page of by tomorrow. These questions are a review of grade 5 and we will be moving on with concepts and the rest of the sheet tomorrow!

Below are some links to help with learning area and perimeter:

Math antics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCdxURXMdFY

Math is fun: https://www.mathsisfun.com/geometry/area.html

In grade 6 we work primarily with rectangular polygons.

After lunch we moved into social!

Today we learned about the courts of Ancient Athens.
We learned about the roles of magistrates, jury's, defendants and plaintiffs!

We finished off our day with reading some articles about the roles of Athenian men, women, children and slaves. We will finish the workbook that is paired with the article in the next few days!

Have a great evening everyone.

First PAT May 8 LA part 1

Today the students began their day with a trip to music followed by dance in gym. We have a specialist in every Thursday teaching the students a super hip dance routine!

After gym we had a guest presenter in to inform the students of the amazing resources that can be found at calgarylibrary.ca. Students can use the website to research for projects and even get extra help in school.

We spent a large chunk of time today reviewing the tips for for writing a news article. We explored how to use the information on the fact sheet to create an article that had a clear lead paragraph and supporting facts with quotes built in. I am excited to see all the amazing improvements from the first article to the one they write tomorrow.

We finished up our day by exploring the Council of 500, otherwise known as the Boule, in Ancient Athens. Did you know that, the Council of 500 had one leader for a total of 24 hours! Short term leadership!

Have a great evening everyone!

I cannot believe how fast this year has flown by! We are officially two weeks out from our first Provincial Achievement Test. On May 8th we will be writing our LA part A in which the students will be writing a narrative story based off a picture prompt and an article based off an event in the past. We have been practicing story writing all year and we are wrapping up our news articles this week. Next week we will be practicing writing both a story and article in one go at least twice.
I will be giving feedback to the students to help them write their next articles before the end of the week!

In math we began one of my favorite units! PERIMETER AREA VOLUME!

Today we began with perimeter, Students need to understand that perimeter is a one dimensional measurement of the distance around an object or shape.

In Social this week we are exploring the structure of government within Ancient Athens!
Today we explored the assembly and how Athens began as a direct democracy. 6000 Athenian born men meeting to discuss war, laws and religion. Can you imagine if we had all the students come together to discuss and vote on a huge decision? Wow! It would be a site to see!

Have a great evening everyone!

Questions such as 35 + 7a =49 & 87- a= 15 are some of the examples of questions they may see.

After Math, during social, students were given a chance to participate in the student vote! We gave them some time to research the candidates and then use a voting screen, ballots and an actual ballot box to collect the votes. I will be totaling and submitting all the votes tonight after school!

After social students joined Mr Mueller for a detailed lesson on how to write news articles. We will be using information from some mock article fairy tale stories to create our articles! Today Mr Mueller showed the students how to write an article using proper language and tomorrow students will put this into practice!

After lunch the students were able to visit library to take out new chapter books!

In the afternoon we gave the students time to research for their planetary descriptions booklets. Students visited the site: Nasaspaceplace for all the spacey facts!
