Happy Thursday Nov 29!

Today the students had an amazing BHS loves reading day! So many students and teachers dressed up as their favourite book characters and enjoyed stopping and reading several times throughout the day.

It has been a busy week in science this week working through kahoot quizzes, review and science presentations! All of this work is a huge benefit to studying for the test tomorrow.

Students enjoyed their extra long music today practicing in preparation for their music performance in December!

Tomorrow we have our science test and both Mr Mueller and I cannot wait to see the results!

Congrats to the Pillars of Care winners for November! Hopefully everyone can make it to our assembly tomorrow at 8:15 am :)

Have a great evening!

BHS Loves Reading Day - November 29
On November 29, 2018, Beddington Heights School will be celebrating all things books on our BHS Loves Reading Day.
Students are welcome and encouraged to come to school dressed as their favorite book character for the day.  They may even want to carry a copy of the book that the character is featured in with them, as we will be having multiple "Drop Everything And Read" times throughout the day.  Classes will also be decorating their doors with book themed artwork, and taking the time to appreciate why reading is so amazing.
We hope to see a good number of students, and teachers, in our school participating in this community spirit event.
We can't wait to see all of our friends and peers dressed up, reading, and showing us what characters mean the most to them.

This week:

In Math this week we will be covering fractions and percents!
The fractions and percents are covering representing them as both pictures and words, then leading into equivalent fractions.

In LA this week we will be doing a combination of descriptive writing and presentations!

In Science we are reviewing for our test Friday! KAHOOT KAHOOT KAHOOT!

In Social we are beginning to learn about provincial government. We begin by exploring how provinces are broken up into constituencies and how the parties are formed.

Have a wonderful evening!

Today the students presented their social equity and equality skits! I am happy to say I am seeing some huge improvements to confidence and public speaking in our grade sixes!

In math today we began to explore fractions and percents. We worked as a class and independently representing different colors of cubes in fractions, pictures and percents. Below is an example of the chart we used.

Remember, If you cannot come tonight there is still time tomorrow to sign up for parent teacher conferences!

Beddington Heights School is supporting the city of Calgary Mayor's Food Drive, along with WE Scare Hunger! We are accepting monetary ($$) donations in the office, and non-perishable food donations. The pick up date is Dec 10th, let's fill up those boxes and help those in need!

Yesterday the students began their day a bit out the norm. From now until the holiday concert students will have extended music in order to give them time to fully practice as a band.

During the middle block of the day students were given time to write a rhyming reflection that explained one thing they learned from poetry but in a rhyme.

Students were given a large chunk today to work on their science projects and mathletics. It was their choice as to which one they wanted to work on first.

As a method of keeping students accountable for their homework I told students that if they did not finish their spelling sentences they had to finish it before they could work on their projects or mathletics.

In Science, we are starting our end of unit project on Tress and Forests.
I have explained the project today in class.
Attached you will find the expectations and task outline and a model slide (level 4).
In class, we will provide about 1hour a day for research and note-taking time this week.
Students are welcome to use our laptops and create a slide-show.
The due date will be November 26th and determine part of their report card mark in Science.

We began our day by creating our IRIS goals for our upcoming student led conferences. Students gave an explanation about themselves as a learner then listed one goal for Math, LA and personal.

Students had the amazing opportunity to participate in their government yesterday with doing a student vote for the 2026 Olympic Plebiscite. We spent the morning in Social learning about the plebiscite and sharing news articles, interviews and explanations on the chance of having the Olympics in our city once again. Having a votion station in Beddington gave the students the chance to see the voting process including seeing the process, ballots and watching ballots be counted in the counter. Students were able to vote using a ballot and voting stall saying whether they were for or against the vote. The students in room had a majority saying they would have like to see the Olympics again in Calgary. The results of the bid in Calgary stated that we are not going to be hosting the Olympics in 2026.

Just a reminder that students can bring in 1 dollar for votes for the worst and best mustache in the school in support of Movember (Awareness for male cancer and suicide)

Have a wonderful evening!

In math this week we will be applying what we have learned in basic facts to word problems. The skill of solving word problems is essential for life problems and PAT's at the end of the year!

In Social, Students worked out of the textbook researching key terms and reading the pages related to our new unit: Decision Making!

The students were fortunate to see a first nations presentation in the gym today that displayed some traditional artifacts and displayed a dance. Students had a blast experiencing this mini presentation.

Today the students began their day with music. It is always nice to see the students working together playing their instruments each time I pick them up from music.

After music we completed our bi-weekly basic facts math quiz. I am very happy to report our class average was 75%. Some practice is still needed with multiplication and division of decimals but that is why we practice!

After math we spent some time finishing our poppies for the Remembrance Day assembly tomorrow at 10:30. The remainder of the block was spent practicing Kahoot quizzes for our Social Quiz tomorrow. Remember, its never too late to study! Kahoot.com Search local government.

In the afternoon students were introduced to the first elements of story writing! We focused on the six types of conflict that can be found within stories and made small comic strips to showcase these.

The end of the day was rounded off with some additional Kahoot quizzes for some last minute studying for the quiz tomorrow.

Have a nice evening

Looking forward to reading and marking all of the poetry anthologies this week!

Today the students began their day with creating our documentation of learning boards. This board is outside of our classroom and will be viewable at student led conferences night.

In the middle part of the day the students began to practice decimal division! Believe it or not, it is the same as normal division with a trick to solve using decimals. Below is a sheet we were working through today!
We will be having a basic fact data test this week to see the students progress!

Check out math antics for some helpful videos and tips!

In the afternoon the students were able experience the wonders of Kahoot! This online quiz site is free and accessible from any computer. It is our main and fun way to study for tests in social and science!

Special Note:
The majority of our BHS male staff members are participating in our traditional Movember
fundraiser. For a $1 donation students can buy one vote for the teacher with the worst or best mustache this month.
The donations will be going to the Canadian Movember Foundation. Movember is an annual event involving
