Today the students began their day with music before doing the second part of our annotation lesson.
We are using annotation skills to support students when they are reading, studying and prepping for the PAT's.
Below are some of our symbols we use for annotation!

Annotation is like making notes about what you are reading!

After LA we moved into math in which we did a final review lesson before our integers quiz tomorrow! The test will feature comparing integers, adding and subtracting integers and some word problems!

In the afternoon the students went to Mr Mueller's room to work on their space art projects. These projects are chalk pastel drawings of a celestial object that students must then write about.

Finally we finished off our day with students presenting some of their social projects. Tomorrow is the last day to present!

Have a nice evening!
Mr Lancee

A quick note about Telus Spark and Outdoor School

  • I am still missing several permission forms for both Telus Spark and Outdoor School. Please return these ASAP
  • If you are hesitant about outdoor school or the price please contact myself or the school and we can work things out with the school so that every student can participate in outdoor school.
Today in room 14!
Students began their day by writing their March Narrative stories! I am very excited to see all the growth this time around. We explored several high level stories, broke stories down to see what made them excellent, and practiced analyzing pictures and great sentences. Students also had their goals, and successes from their last writing assignment on their desks. Students also had checklists, literary term wall, and thesaurus to beef up their writing.

After Story writing we continued to explore integers. I noticed that several students are still struggling with how to add and subtract integers.

Below is a video which we watched in class to help with clarifying their questions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BgblvF90UE

After lunch, Students did their bi weekly basic facts quiz in which they scored a class average of: 80%!

Once students were done the test they were given some time to work on their charter of rights and freedoms storyboards. I am excited to see all the hard work that has been done to complete this project! For the rubric and assignment, please review my old blog messages from last week.

A note for the girls in grade 6:

Girls excel in math / math summer camp program info

Dear CBE Teachers,
The University of Calgary is hosting two exciting math enrichment events for junior high school students this year: Girls Excel in Math (GEM) and the CMS Regional Math Camp (Alberta).
GEM is an event open to all junior high girls (with a teacher volunteer from each participating school). TheCMS Regional Math Camp is for students who are exceptionally talented in math. (We especially need your help spreading the word about this event to girls and minority students.) More information about each event can be found below (and in the attached documents).
GEM is a brand-new program for 6th – 8th grade girls who are interested in having fun exploring mathematical topics that they would not normally see in the classroom (e.g. cryptology, voting theory, graph colouring). The participants do not need to excel at math – everyone is welcome! There will be two Saturday morning GEM events happening this spring at the University of Calgary. Students will be recruited and mentored by excellent teachers at their own schools. Saturday sessions will be led by these teachers. We will provide the curriculum and will meet with the teachers before the first session to discuss the curriculum. More details (including dates) are attached.
Would your school like to participate in GEM? To sign-up (or if you have questions), please contact Lauren DeDieu: lauren.dedieu@ucalgary.ca .

CMS Regional Math Camp (Alberta): The CMS Regional Math Camp (Alberta) is a week-long summer camp for grades 7 to 10 students in Alberta. The main objective of the camp is to bring together mathematically talented students with the goal of providing opportunities for networking and training in mathematics and mathematical problem solving.

We would appreciate it if you could share the attached summer camp application with your strong math students. In particular, please encourage your strong female math students to apply. (The organizers are striving to achieve a gender balance at the camp this year.) Note that the application involves a mathematical problem-solving component.

More information about the camp is contained in the attached camp application. If you have any questions, feel free to send an email to mathcamp@ucalgary.ca .

Thank you so much for your help!

Sincerely,

Lauren DeDieu

Three important things sent home today:

1. Outdoor school preparation sheets. This is an information packet that will inform students and parents of the safety and what will be needed for outdoor school.
-These are not the sign up forms yet...Next week:)

2. Medical information form: this will be the form that NEEDS to be filled out to inform me of any medical conditions or medication for outdoor school. Even if you're unsure whether your child will be attending or does not have any medical conditions, please still fill in the boxes. N/A is fine.

3. Order of Operations quiz- I am sending this test home to be signed and corrected and returned Monday. If your child scored under 70% on their test they have a chance to rewrite a similar test on Monday.

Speaking of math...March Mathletics Madness Month (Alliteration :)
Get going on those assignments! I am really hoping our class can be the winners of the March Madness top scores in grade 6! But even more important, practicing math questions and skills will, and I stress WILL, improve students understanding. This will make math in grade 6, 7, 12 easier!

Take your learning into your own hands :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

Math: Orders of Operations and Integers
Students will be doing a quiz tomorrow to measure their understanding of BEDMAS

Science: Students are growing their understanding of sky science. They will be focusing on the phases of the moon and terms such as revolution.

Social: Today the students took up three critical thinking questions about the charter:
1. What is the charter of rights and freedoms?
2. How is the charter of rights and freedoms rooted in the past?
3. Do we need a charter of rights and freedoms?

After exploring these questions I introduced the students to their new project.
Students will be making a storyboard about one specific right or freedom from the charter.
