Narrative stories final was due today. I still have a few students who need to print or hand in their stories! Please do so by tomorrow or I will have to make phone calls to parents.
This week in room 14:
Math: Starting patterns, growing and decreasing patters, picture patters, patterns with one to two steps.
Science: Field trip to hangar flight museum, properties of flight
LA: Starting The Giver Novel Study.
Social: Presentations
Today the students began their day with a class meeting. We talked about the week before and what they thought went well/needed work. Everyone agreed that the work ethic had greatly improved in room 14 and the push to finish projects and homework is getting much better.
Next we went over the ratio math quiz from Friday. The skills tested in this test required students use ratio, word problem and counting skills. Students were able to see their mistakes made on the test and see where they will have to review before the PAT at the end of the year. We had a talk about how students need to take their learning into their own hands and ask more clarifying questions/seek help when they do not understand.
In the middle block of the day students were busy showcasing their social campaign posters. The debate is getting heated!
This week we have begun our gymnastics unit involving climbers and other phys ed structures. Please make sure you are being safe and following Mr Sadowsky's safety rules for phys ed.

Narrative stories final draft due Monday
Today the students started their days by participating in our in school Ignite program. Overall it was a huge success for all the 4/5/6 students to be interacting and having a blast doing the different activities.
After our Ignite program the students wrote their ratio's test. We will be going over the marked tests which will then be sent home to be signed. Speaking of signing tests... Today I sent home the basic facts tests from yesterday. I have instructed the students to take them home to signed and corrected. I am trying this strategy to give the students time to correct their work and build the relationship between school and home. I would like the tests signed and returned for Monday.
After Math, Students were given time to work on their narrative story final drafts. These final drafts are due Monday!
After buddies and gym the day was done!

I want to start off by saying thank you to all the students who pushed themselves to get their social campaign posters completed by the due date yesterday. The effort put into creating great projects that the students are proud of is a huge celebration for 2019. We will be continuing our presentations on Friday (time permitting) leading into Monday. Our Provincial government unit test will be next Friday!
I am away from the school today at a PD session and will be returning tomorrow.
It is going to be a busy day Friday with our two quizzes and finishing Narrative stories!

This week is a very busy week with projects and stories being completed at the same time.
Be on top of your work and push yourself to complete tasks on time:)
This week in Room 14
Math: Finishing Ratios, Quiz, Starting Patterns!
Social: Working on campaign posters and doing presentations.
Science: Testing different flight principles through experiments.
LA: Editing, revising and finishing narrative stories.
Phys Ed.: Gymnastics
Today students began their by working on some basic facts problems to prep for our basic facts quiz on Thursday. Next students were given time on computers to work through some mathletics assignments around Ratios. The trick to ratios is knowing your fact families for multiplication and division. For example: 20:25 can be simplified to 4:5. We know this because both 20 and 25 are divisible by 5!
After math students printed the first draft of their stories and began to peer edit using a peer editing checklist. The detailed checklist below helps students and peers to improve their stories for the next draft.
After LA Students were given one full hour to work on their Social Campaign posters:
Students must show the party leader, party name, slogan, and think about what their party is going to do for Alberta (Policies).
After lunch, Students were given time for their new spelling words.

The last chunk of the day was spent with Mr Mueller in Science. Students were testing bottle rockets and principle of thrust!

Today the students began their day by writing and marking their narrative story spelling tests. It was great to see all the students examples and definitions of our spelling words.

I must stress the importance of finishing these stories on time. We will be peer editing the stories next week and if your story is not finished then you are taking away from someones editing time and growth.
After LA, the students had their monthly Friday music class with Mr Wiens followed by buddies and gym!

Today the students began their day by practicing their basic facts. Four questions of x-+/ to keep their skills sharp!
After the basic facts we moved into solving some ratio identification problems. Ratios are great because of the amount of critical outside the box thinking students must use. Below is a picture of the intro activity we solved:
In LA, students were given a mini lesson on DAD (Dialogue, Description, Action) and how it is the essence of creating great paragraphs in stories. The first draft of the stories is due Monday and we will be working hard on them this coming Thursday and Friday.
In Social the students learned the process of how laws are formed in provincial government and the responsibilities of the lieutenant governor. Students were also introduced to a new project in which they must research political parties and convince their classmates to vote for their campaign poster.
The project and rubric are listed below:
