Today we began our day by relearning the basics of algebra.

As a part of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms we have a right to:
  • Fundamental Freedoms🡪express (state) your opinions
  • Fundamental Freedoms🡪join (belong) to any group
  • Democratic rights🡪 Parliament needs to have a meeting at least one time per year
  • Mobility Rights🡪 As a Canadian citizen, you have the right to stay, leave or enter Canada as you wish as long as you do not have a criminal record
  • Minority Language Education Rights🡪 as Canadian citizens, we have a right to receive schooling in both English and French
  • Legal Rights🡪 you have the right to a fair trial and are assumed to be innocent until proven guilty
  • Fundamental Freedoms🡪 right to practice whatever religion you choose (wish to practice)
  • Charter can only be amended by the government🡪 people vote against or for changes and then a decision is made
  • Charter falls underneath our constitution

Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms:

Fundamental Freedoms:
  • Right to practice whatever religion you choose

Democratic Rights:

  • To participate in an election (if you are a Canadian Citizen and are 18 years of age or older)
  • To run for an election
  • To have legislatures and Parliament meet at least once a year
  • To have elections at least every 5 years

Representative Democracy:
  • Where citizens elect people to represent them (elected officials)

Collective Rights:
  • Rights that help to protect a certain group (Aboriginal people, Francophones, Anglophones)

Mobility Rights:
  • Canadian citizens (permanent residents) have the right to enter, stay or leave Canada as they wish🡪 these rights can be taken away if you are convicted of a crime
  • Move to another province and can earn a living in any province

Legal Rights:
  • To feel free and safe
  • To have a fair and quick public trial
  • In a trial to be assumed innocent until proven guilty

Official Languages of Canada Rights:
  • Right to communicate with and receive services from the federal government in French and English

Minority Language Education Rights:
  • To have publicly funded schools for Francophones in provinces where most people speak English and for Anglophones in provinces (Quebec) where most people speak French

General Rights:
  • To uphold existing Aboriginal and treaty rights
  • To uphold the multicultural heritage of Canadians

Enforcement Rights:
  • Right to go to court if any of your other rights are denied🡪 often times will go to the Supreme Court of Canada
