Today the students began their day with our Social Studies spelling test. 15 words related to social government and the sentences that students created were due.

After spelling the students were given some time to review the math work from the weekend. This will not be taken for marks but is great practice that builds student knowledge for the quiz at the end of the week.

After math, room 14 reviewed some the important literary terms needed for the poetry anthology and in depth explored the Haiku!

POETRY PROJECT

After, we started working on our poetry project.
Over the next two weeks, we are writing a minimum of 8 different types of poems to create a personal poetry anthology (= A collection of poems with title page, table of contents, overarching theme).

Here is a list of poems we discussed and practiced in class:

The Basic Poems:

Haiku (Senryu) =>  Japanese syllable count poems
Rhyming Couplet (2 lines)
Tercet (3 lines)
Quatrain (4 line stanza)
Cinquain (5 lines)  => syllable count poem
Limerick (5 lines)
Diamante (7 lines)
Biopoem (autobiographic / follows a pattern)
Concrete / Shape Poem (A poem written in the shape of its subject)

More advanced forms (level 3 & 4)

Ballad  (6-8 stanzas á 4 lines)
Ode   (3 stanzas á 4 lines + a final rhyming couplet )

After lunch the students had a very busy afternoon learning the basics of how a local government is organized and the elected officials/councillor responsibilities.

No spelling this week as it is a short week!

Below are the instructions for the journal entry due next week.
